VIENNA, AUSTRIA

After Gustav Klimt's ‘The Kiss’ Belvedere Palace

Who were the lovers in The Kiss? What inspired Gustav Klimt to create one of the most iconic works in art history?

The origin of an immortal work

This work was painted in 1908, but its history began earlier, in the late 1890s, when Klimt was commissioned to paint the ceilings at the University of Vienna.

The work was considered offensive and was heavily criticised by society. Klimt decided to travel to Italy, where he found inspiration in the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna and St Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

Italy: creative rebirth

Following criticism, Klimt decided to travel to Italy, where she found inspiration in:

  • The Church of San Vitale in Ravenna
  • St Mark’s Basilica in Venice

The golden mosaics, symbolism and spirituality would forever mark his work.

I invite you to experience his story before visiting ‘The Kiss’ and thus, for a moment, see through his eyes and try to understand what she tried to reflect in this magnificent work that has been interpreted by so many since its creation.
